| Summary: | This research case study discusses the use of trade magazines as a supplemental source of data and other information for qualitative research. It is based on a recently completed research project, a study of the impacts of drought on the shipment by barge of grains produced in the American Heartland for export, and the disruptions to grain supply chains produced by low water levels of the Mississippi River in 2022 and 2023. Because of the timing of the drought events that coincided with grain harvests and the peak season for grain shipment and sales, information was needed that was more up to date than that which the academic literature on agricultural transportation and marketing could provide. Articles in trade magazines provide details, as well as timely content, that is potentially valuable to researchers in a wide range of disciplines using qualitative methods and/or case studies. As this research case study explains, trade publications are best utilized as supplements to other qualitative methods, such as interviews and academic literature reviews. Trade magazines are an underutilized resource in academic research, which ought to be remedied, given that their articles are written by experts for the benefit of experts. Trade magazines exist within a wide range of disciplines, from social and behavioral sciences, to business, engineering and health-related fields. |
