| Item Description: | First Irish edition. See Pottle, page 116. The first edition was published in London, printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1785. "Practically a line for line reprint of the first edition, which it resembles very closely in appearance ... It was set up from a copy of the first edition which had all the cancels ..., and the two-state leaves in the 'second' or revised condition."--Pottle, page 116 Signatures: [A]⁴ B⁸-2L⁸( -2L8). A variant of the Dublin edition exists in which leaf Ii3 is a cancel. The text near the bottom of page 485 in the second state contains the phrase "One gentleman in company expressing his opinion 'that Fingal was certainly genuine ... '" instead of the original "Young Mr. Tytler stepped briskly forward, and said 'Fingal is certainly genuine ... " The Cushing Library/Rare Books copy has "Young Mr. Tytler stepped briskly forward, and said 'Fingal is certainly genuine ... " on page 485. Dedication by the author to Edmond Malone. With a half-title and a final advertisement leaf. The Cushing Library/Rare Books copy was acquired as part of the Lois Goddard Morrison Collection of Eighteenth Century Literature. |
