The book and exhibition focus on the style-defining era of the interwar and post-war period and also refer to the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented. The book contains, among other things, newly produced photographs of the essential, original works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein, texts by Kimberly Bradley on the workshop in the international design context, Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop and Bärbel Vischer on the surrealist perspective on the comprehensive oeuvre of the Auböck workshop" -- Die ikonischen, bis heute handgefertigten Designklassiker der in vierter Generation in Wien geführten Werkstätte Auböck waren von Anfang an ihrer Zeit voraus und prägten österreichisches Design generationenübergreifend. Die Ausstellung ICONIC AUBÖCK konzentriert sich auf die stilprägende Ära der Zwischen- und Nachkriegszeit bis in die experimentellen 1980er Jahre. Carl Auböck (1900-1957) brachte - inspiriert vom Bauhaus - lokale und internationale Bewegungen zusammen und prägte das charakteristische Auböck-Design, vom Briefbeschwerer bis zum Baumtisch oder Lampenentwurf. Das Konzept des Objet trouvé, des gefundenen Objekts, nahm er dabei in sein avantgardistisches Formenrepertoire auf. Erstmals präsentiert wird das Werk der Bildhauerin und Textilkünstlerin Mara Uckunowa (1895-1987), die Auböck am Bauhaus in Weimar kennenlernte und heiratete. Ihr gemeinsamer Sohn Carl Auböck (1924-1993) fokussierte das transformative Potenzial des Industrial Design und verschaffte der Werkstätte - inspiriert durch sein Studium in den USA und Kooperationen mit internationalen Gestalter*innen - weltweite Bekanntheit.
