| Summary: | As archives increasingly move toward digitization, researchers gain incredible access to historical content and materials through online methods. Using archival research no longer requires a researcher to be locked in a sanitized space, riffling through delicate and sometimes deteriorating primary documents; instead, online databases, including online newspaper archives, offer an opportunity for researchers to employ historical artifacts with the convenience of internet access. This case study chronicles the use of online newspaper archives as the basis for a research project on Harriette Bailey Conn, a public figure in Indiana politics in the 1960s and 1970s. Online newspaper archives, including Newspapers.com, the Google News Archive, and the Wayback Machine (an internet archive), were essential in providing firsthand accounts, individual narratives, and broader sociopolitical context that help provide a broader view of Conn's life. Though these archives were not the sole source of information in this research project, they provided invaluable context and contributed significantly to the study. This case study will provide a basis for how these archives were used in the Conn research project, explain the process and value of including these archives, offer recommendations for best practices, and suggest alternative uses that can assist researchers in their own projects. |
