| Summary: | Over the past decade, the impact of new media technologies on contemporary dating practices has become a subject of debate in both popular culture and academic research. As interest in this topic continues to accelerate, driven by new dating apps and artificial intelligence technologies, this guide aims to provide recommendations for researching dating apps effectively and safely. Focusing on a qualitative methodology, the guide identifies the key features and challenges of conducting qualitative interviews with and about dating app users. While crediting flexibility, reflexivity, and rapport to be key features of qualitative interviewing, the guide simultaneously draws attention to the challenges researchers may face. Reflecting on the author's experiences as a lone female researcher, the guide draws attention to how friendliness can be misconstrued as flirtation and power dynamics can be manipulated when seeking to cultivate an amiable and equitable interview dynamic. In so doing, the guide seeks not to incite fear. By reflecting on the importance of ethical and reflexive practice, this guide recommends measures that allow researchers to anticipate and mediate power hierarchies in their research and thus reduce harm. In so doing, this guide serves as a useful tool for researchers conducting qualitative research in any research field, but particularly for those conducting research on dating apps. |
