| Summary: | This case study is based on research using a Facebook group as a space for story sharing addressing research participants' experiences of giving birth. Here participants were invited to join a group that was specifically set up for the research project and share multimedia accounts of their own birth experiences while engaging in asynchronous discussion with others. This case study reflects on the ethical issues involved with engaging participants in research addressing a highly personal and emotive topic using a semiprivate online space. Specific focus will be paid to participant recruitment to this sort of research and to the online safety of participants and researchers. Readers will learn more about the benefits and challenges of using Facebook groups as asynchronous spaces for engaging with research participants with lessons that might be applied to managing closed participant groups in other online spaces such as through Microsoft Teams, Slack, or WhatsApp. |
