Description
Summary:Warrior Up! is a documentary series that follows Indigenous youth across Turtle Island who are standing up and making change, transforming their communities, their lands and their lives for the better. Episode 9: At 20, Sophia Sidarous is already a veteran land defender and water protector who has led many actions and protests. Now she's safeguarding Mi'kmaq land from encroachment and traveling back to her community in New Brunswick for a traditional powwow. Host Joshua Odjick joins first-year law student Sophia in her home community of Metepenagiag, New Brunswick as she shows her friend Liam a sacred pipestone area he will help safeguard from mining encroachment. Then Joshua joins Sophia and Liam as they prepare for a traditional powwow: the two will be leading a group of kids participating in their first children's drumming group and she will also dance Women's Traditional. The drumming group gives a powerful performance, we meet Sophia's uncle, George Paul, who founded the powwow, and the day turns into a special event for Joshua when Sophia encourages him to dance for the first time.
