Description
Summary:For twelve years Dr. Gabor Maté was the staff physician at a clinic for drug-addicted people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, where he worked with patients challenged by hard-core drug addiction, mental illness, and HIV, including at Vancouver Supervised Injection Site. In this video seminar, Dr. Maté examines the source of addictions in the early childhood environment and the neurobiology of the brain's reward pathways, discusses the chemistry and physiology of substance dependency, and explains how addiction can function as a false blessing (i.e. emotional anesthetic or personality booster). He considers the social basis of addiction through economic, cultural, and political factors and probes how much choice the addict has and how much responsibility.
