| Summary: | Through her school's mentorship program, Shakira wins a chance to spend a day with a police officer. But she realizes that all she really knows about the profession is what she sees on television. According to Timeblazers Sam and Jen, the concept of policing dates back as far as ancient Rome, but modern police came to be in just the past 200 years. In fact, it was British Bobbies who were the first police to be separate from the court. Sam plays a bread thief chased by law enforcement officer Jen in 1800s London, in Canada; and in the American west. Mounties and sheriffs were not only responsible for keeping the peace, they also collected taxes, aided in customs inspection, chopped wood and even acted as a town's doctor and dentist. |
