| Summary: | Episode 147 - Gamma Ray Bursts: During the 1950s nuclear trepidation was reaching extreme levels. In an attempt to limit the arms race the super powers signed a test ban treaty that came into effect in 1963. To make certain that there were no violations; America developed a series of satellites called Vela. These were equipped with X-ray and Gamma ray sensors, which could detect the distinctive electro-magnetic pulse associated with a nuclear detonation. The Velas were very successful but they detected signals that their designers had not anticipated. |
