| Summary: | Already spotted on the same bill during the Zaire 74 review, James Brown and BB King had the good idea of renewing the concept a few years later on the Beverly stage in California. This emblematic date is naturally a clash of the titans, with polished bands and ad hoc sets. Invited by Mr Dynamite, the guitarist and blues singer opens the party with three frenzied titles including a remarkable interpretation of "The Thrill Is Gone." Supported by an efficient band (one thinks of the Hammond organ lines or the brass section) BB King imposes an urban tone which quickly seduces the audience. Equally inspired, James Brown returns the favor with a show assembled by the legendary JB's. Focused on titles of the 70s, the Godfather attacks full on with the immense "The Payback," turns lead into gold with the timeless "Sex Machine," and gives a few nods to the glorious past with rereadings of "Prisoner Of Love" and "Georgia On My Mind." Saving the best for last, the brawl between BB King and James Brown, for its part, goes beyond the simple wake-up call: punctuated by many lavish solos, this six-minute sequence celebrates the unmistakable links which unite the blues, soul and funk.
