At the age of 19, Mpule Kwelagombe won the 1999 Miss Universe beauty pageant. She used her platform to help in the fight against HIV/ AIDS. In 2000, she was appointed as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.
