Today those boom days have been re-created, and tourists can get the flavor of what the city was like in the 19th century by visiting a silver mine and learning about the process or visiting the newspaper office where Samuel Clemens was a reporter before he became Mark Twain. Back in Reno, we learn that the transcontinental railroad saved this city, built in 1868 as a mining town.
