Description
Summary:The Assembly of Kosovo declared its country's independence as a Republic in February of 2008; however, Serbia continues to claim sovereignty over Kosovo, which keeps this Balkan country a potential hot spot for conflict. As Chapter One of this historical documentary points out, this dispute dates back over 600 years to the Battle of Kosovo, when Kosovo was lost to Turkish invaders, yet Serbians see the battle as a symbol of patriotism. The former president of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, used the anniversary of this important event to arouse nationalism against Kosovo and to accuse its Albanian majority of genocide against the Serbian minority, which eventually led to the Kosovo War, a conflict that did not end until June 1999. Chapter Two focuses on Tajikistan, strategically located north of Afghanistan, where from 1992 to 1997, the country was torn apart by a devastating civil war, killing an estimated 50,000 people. Here we get perspectives of this Central Asian country from Barnett R. Rubin, formerly the Director of the Ctr. for the Study of Central Asia at Columbia University, and today is a Senior Fellow at NYU's Ctr. on Intl. Cooperation and the author of The Fragmentation of Afghanistan; also from Shahrbanou Tadjbakhsh, formerly at the School of IPA at Columbia University, and today is the Director of the CERI Program for Peace and Human Security at L'Institut d' Etudes Politiques in Paris.
