Description
Summary:Episode 247 - Distributed Computing: Since 1992 radio telescopes have been scanning deep space looking for modulated radio signals. The type of radio signals we are familiar with can only be generated by intelligent beings but the huge amounts of data collected by the giant dishes searching for intelligence need to be carefully analysed using very powerful computers so the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence decided to ask for help from domestic computer users around the world. It's called distributed computing and other research projects needing access to vast amounts of computing power, yet with only a modest budget, are making available special programmes that distribute pieces of a giant research exercise to volunteersʼ computers via the internet.
