| Summary: | At Valentine's High School in Ilford, the Teaching and Learning group are spearheading a whole-school strategy for Assessment for Learning. At an evening meeting we see teachers feeding back on experimental work in their own departments, and brainstorming ideas. Science teacher Richard Griffin uses Key Questions with Year 9, but also grapples with more complex ways of questioning pupils to deepen their understanding, in this case of electricity. We also visit charismatic Maths teacher, Vicky Inman, as she combines 'Traffic Lights' and 'No Hands Up' in Year 9. She comments on the value of these techniques as tools for inclusion in a subject that traditionally alienates a lot of pupils. Vicky discusses the excitement of getting positive responses from students rather than a sea of blank faces. Back at the meeting, we hear views on the deeper meaning of AFL beneath the surface 'ticklist' of strategies. |
