| Summary: | The area around Ypres in Belgium saw a very heavy loss of British lives during World War I.A Year 9 history class is taken on a tour of some of the key battle grounds and cemeteries. Their guides concentrate on the individual stories of some of those who took part in the fighting. In a preserved trench system, the class learns about day-to-day living, and enjoys an authentic meal. In the evening, they join in an act of remembrance as buglers sound the "Last Post" at the Menin Gate. At the end of their trip, the class watches a moving re-enactment of the truce of Christmas 1914, and gets to talk to a British and a German soldier of the period. Key Facts The visit takes in Commonwealth cemeteries (Tyne Cot and Essex Farm) and a German cemetery (Langemarke). The Menin Gate ceremony takes place every day of the year. The Christmas truce is re-enacted at Prowse Point, one of the actual sites. |
