Summary:1999 was a year of momentous happenings, with a devastating earthquake in Turkey, fears of a millennium bug sweeping the world's technology, and a change of president for South Africa. Nelson Mandela stepped down as South Africa's first black president, ending a political career which saw the abolition of apartheid in his country as well as a long jail term, ending in 1990. The Turkish Earthquake caused 17,000 deaths, and thousands of ethnic Albanians fled the Southern Serbian province of Kosovo and were stranded at the border to Macedonia.
