Summary:1985 stands out as a year of global giving, hijacks, and remembrance. According to organizer Bob Geldof, Live Aid was 'the greatest gig in the galaxy', staged simultaneously in London and Philadelphia and including world famous acts performing for charity. In total, Live Aid raised over 150 million pounds for famine relief. Meanwhile, 2WA Flight 847 was hijacked by a Lebanese group who had managed to smuggle weapons on board. The ordeal lasted two weeks, but luckily most of the passengers escaped unharmed. In August, the Japanese commemorated the fortieth anniversary of the atomic bombs that devastated the country.
