| Abstract: | These teachers have come together in this workshop series to share and discuss ways to help their students become more engaged in literature. An important component to that goal is assessment. How can they gauge how well their students are learning and how does that impact their teaching decisions. In a classroom that explores the many layers of a text a students understanding of literature isn't based on memorizing details of the plot. Instead it focuses on learning to make and defend valid interpretations of literature. Standard fill-in-the-blank tests won't give teachers a complete picture of what their students are learning. Other methods of assessment can complement traditional measures of progress. In the next hour teachers will talk about the strategies they use for assessment and why these different methods are all useful in their teaching. |
