Description
Summary:Ethiopiques legend in age-defying form. Along with the likes of Mulatu Astatke and Alemayehu Esthete, Girma Bèyènè is one of the revered trailblazers of the 'Swinging Addis' scene that flourished in the Ethiopian capital between the late '60s and mid '70s, and was rediscovered over 20 years ago, making a huge impact on audiences the world over. This concert finds the vocalist, pianist and arranger sounding as fresh as ever in the company of Parisian band Akalé Wubé, who backed him on his 2016 comeback album *Mistakes On Purpose*. Bèyènè's voice has lost none of its seductive understatement, and his Amharic lyrics are delivered with the same languorous rasp to excellent effect. His French collaborators perform admirably, nailing down the breezy rhythms and bringing a shot of quasi-Stax soul to the horn section. Bèyènè may be the grand old man of East African music, but he still sounds as if he is in the first flush of youth. **Kevin Le Gendre**.
