| Summary: | The enduring marriage of soul, jazz and technology has produced generations of innovative composers. Herbie Hancock and his pronounced taste for synthesizers comes to mind ... Or Stevie Wonder, who built a large part of his 70's production on the clavinet and the moog. Heirs to this prestigious lineage, the New Yorkers of The Lesson GK offer a magnetic set on the stage of the Moods Club in Zurich. Supported by two enveloping keyboards and a tightly knit rhythm section, the singers and MCs develop melodies with unadulterated lyricism. As is customary in the genre, the introductory jam transports spectators on a magic carpet ride while numerous musical bridges encourage an atmosphere of spirituality. Largely improvised, this live performance also looks at experimental themes. In this respect, the aforementioned voices often blend magically into the compositions. The finale is particularly effective, its rap phrasing and its synthetic layers streaked with dub effects... Vincent Caffiaux. |
