| Summary: | Pts. I & II- in 1945, during the final months of World War II, Nazi officers sank a number of wooden boxes in Lake Toplitz in the Austrian Alps. The contents of the boxes remained a mystery until this summer when 60 MINUTES II began an intensive search using an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) submarine to scan the bottom of the lake. The boxes were found to contain a cache of counterfeit currency, mostly British pounds, printed under duress by concentration camp prisoners. Hitler's ill-conceived plan was to undermine the Allied currencies and finance the German war effort. |
