| Summary: | Award-winning Sri Lankan director Asoka Handagama explores gender issues in Tani Tatuwen Piyabanna (Flying with One Wing). Successful mechanic Manju has a happy marriage, and enjoys dancing and playing soccer with his neighbors. This all changes when he gets in a car accident and the doctor who treats him discovers he is really a woman. Handagama's wife Anoma Jandari, who plays the role of Manju, says: 'From the submissive experiences of my own mother, I saw how society constructed the male to be different from the female. When I got this role, I was glad to have an opportunity to express my own protest at the femaleness enforced on me.' This exploration of sex roles in Sri Lankan society is very controversial, but has also won many awards, such as Best Asian Film (Tokyo International Film Festival), Best Actress (Singapore International Film Festival) and Audience Award (Torino International Film Festival). Based on a true story.
