Summary:As close to us as New York is to Berlin, the core of the Earth is slightly smaller than the moon and nearly as hot as the surface of the sun. Horizon meets the scientists trying to understand this hidden monster. What they have discovered is throwing new light on the evolution of the planet, the age of the core and its future. Horizon also discovers that the core is cooling faster than anyone thought. And when the liquid core becomes solid, the magnetic field which protects the planet will disappear. Without it Earth will be as desolate as Mars.
