| Summary: | Getting children to sing is not usually difficult, but helping them to improve can be a challenge for non-specialists. Teachers who lack confidence in their own singing find it hard to introduce and nurture key singing skills in the classroom. This programme focuses on an INSET workshop with teachers and support staff at Cecil Road Primary School. run by Kent LEA music advisor, Helen MacGregor. Helen takes the teachers and support staff through a progression of warm-ups, chants and songs to help find and develop the voice and to explore range, character and pitch. To the surprise of some participants, the workshop culminates in part-singing and pleasing harmonies. The activities demonstrated in the workshop are designed for use in both with both KS1 and KS2 classes. The programme is the second in a pair of programmes tackling the issue of singing skills and confidence, it is extremely relevant to non-specialist teachers delivering Music in the KS1/2 classroom, and focuses on applying the techniques shown in programme 1. Most young children love to sing, but teachers who lack confidence in their own singing find it difficult to introduce and nurture singing skills in the classroom. This programme follows up on an INSET workshop that was delivered to staff at Cecil Road Primary School by Kent LEA music advisor, Helen MacGregor. Helen re-visits the school to see how they re doing. She looks at Reception, Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 teachers to see how they are using the warm-ups, chants and songs she has taught them with their pupils. |
