Summary:This video introduces us to fiber artists Michael Cummings, and Peggy Hartwell. Their dazzling creations bridge the gap between folk art and fine art. Each shows how their art is in the African American folk tradition, incorporating storytelling, spirituality, a sense of origins, and of course, brilliant color. They pay homage to their mentors, including Romare Bearden, Sister Gertrude Morgan and Clementine Hunter. Other influences are jazz and blues, religion and fine arts. The results are always different and aesthetically significant expressions of the spirit of the individual. Senior research fellow of the Folk Art Institute, Lee Kogan provides historical perspective on the quilting tradition.
