| Summary: | US Embassy Iran: The Iranian revolution of 1978 to 1979 heralded a turbulent time in world politics, prompting the coming to power of the Islamic leader Ayatollah Khomeini and the overthrow of the shah, who left the country in 1979. The change in ruler had particular ramifications for the US, which had long supported the shah's regime. When the ailing shah requested permission to visit the US for medical reasons, the Iranian reaction was one of anger. A hastily planned protest was organized by a group of militant Iranian students calling themselves the Muslim student followers of the imam's line, but it soon snowballed into something much more significant. Early in the morning on the 4th of November 1979 the group stormed the American diplomatic mission in Tehran, to voice their objections to us influence in Iran. Dillinger: Little Bohemia Lodge, Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin - the glamorously named hideout of one John Dillinger and his gang during April 1934. Dillinger was one of the US's most notorious bank robbers, with a lifetime haul totaling around $300,000, a huge sum in depression-era America. The previous month he had absconded from prison yet again, this time from the supposedly escape-proof Crown Point, Indiana county jail. |
