| Summary: | Modern methods of studying geography encourages the development of enquiry skills. The lesson explored in this programme offers children an immediate chance to develop these as well as giving them the opportunity to vividly use their imaginations. Debbie King, a Key Stage 1 teacher at Horwood & Newton Tracey Primary School in north Devon is shown teaching a unit of work for KS1 geography called At the Seaside . It can be taught across one day or over a period of weeks. Debbie evaluates the unit with David Weatherley, Devon Curriculum Services Geography Advisor and Alison Alldridge, Geography Coordinator at the school. The lesson features enquiry, imagination, and evaluation of images of the seaside. Geography is then combined with literacy as the children fit words to the pictures and write postcards using geographic vocabulary. |
