| Summary: | In the Forbidden City of Beijing, China in a legendary time, the beautiful yet cold-hearted Princess Turandot must marry. She issues a challenge to her would-be suitors: "Any prince seeking to marry me must answer three riddles. But if he fails, he will have to die." In the crowd awaiting the execution of the latest failure, Timur, vanquished king of Tartary, encounters his long-lost son Prince Calaf. Calaf falls in love with Turandot at first sight, and takes the challenge. When Calaf is successful, Turandot refuses to marry him. Calaf poses his own challenge, and Turandot orders the entire city to help her overcome it. The theme is eternal--love triumphant over barbaric cruelty. |
