Description
Summary:Sophisticated system concepts for imaging, communications and remote sensing are moving rapidly from the drawing board to reality. We are coming into the age of free space electro-optics (FSEO), where FSEO systems are seen as a viable competitor to RF systems for many applications. This book is intended as an introduction for optical engineering students and practitioners to the tools and insights for pursuing first-order system design in the areas of imaging, LIDAR/LADAR and communications. Unfortunately, the gig employment philosophy of today's market necessitates the hired engineer to contribute immediately, or in a very short time. There is no time for a long learning curve. Fortunately, engineers don't really care where the tools come from but rather are concerned about their utility, accuracy and completeness. This is the purpose of this book. This book provides validated analytical models, and the supporting data in some cases, so an optical engineer can succeed in system development for several selected application areas. Although not every application is in this book (it would be too long), a lot of the contained information can be leveraged to perform work in other FSEO applications not covered here. This book will discuss the various aspects of normally encountered channel effects and how to model them with equations that have been validated by field experiments. Another unique aspect in this book is that both signal-plus-noise and target-or-clutter (replacement model) detection theories are discussed and analyzed. Selected sets of data comparisons are included so that engineers get a feel for the numbers and the magnitude of the various degradations. Problems are included to help solidify the material covered as well as expand the reader's understanding of the material basis.
