Description
Summary:This book forms the proceedings of the International Meeting on UNEP's Regional Programmes in Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, Genoa, Italy, 12-14 February 1992. Over the last decade semi-enclosed seas and their coastal zones have been faced with a notable increase in population and often uncontrolled and uncoordinated processes of development. Such processes have occurred, to some extent, in all maritime countries, resulting in coastal pollution, irrational use of resources and deterioration of living conditions. The purpose of the meeting was to compare the experiences of two areas of similar geographical profile, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, in safeguarding their respective regional seas. National experts from both the Caribbean and Mediterranean United Nations Environment Action Plans were brought together for the first time.; These proceedings concentrate on three issues of particular interest to both regions: water quality, including pollution from terrestrial sources and from oil discharge at sea; coastal zone management, including the impact of tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage; sea-level rise and the risks and consequences of erosion and flooding. This volume will be of interest to environmental and ecological scientists concerned with coastal and shoreline management and sea water pollution.
