| Summary: | In 2017, the government of India enacted legislation regarding e-waste management. The legislation included collection targets of e-waste for the producers of electronics in India and how this waste was to be channelized to authorized recyclers. However, the rules were silent on the informal--or unorganized--sector, which handles 95% of e-waste in India and does not practice safe disposal. In the aftermath of the legislation, Mr. Pranshu Singhal realized that there was a significant infrastructural gap between the objectives of the legislation and the ability to achieve those objectives by the affected industries. His desire to address this gap led to the origin of a start-up firm, Karo Sambhav (in English, Make it Possible), which has become India's leading organization in the e-waste sector. Karo Sambhav is dedicated to making the e-waste management system in India accountable and efficient.This case discusses challenges that the firm addressed using innovative solutions, such as formalizing the informal sector (in contrast to registered businesses), harnessing technology to make the e-waste collection system as error-free as possible, and spreading awareness of the program using children as agents of change. Students will be asked to analyze Mr. Pranshu Singhal's entrepreneurial journey to create a previously non-existent industry and assess challenges that he will face in the future. |
