Description
Summary:Publius Cornelius Tacitus's biography of his father-in-law Gnaeus Julius Agricola, known as The Agricola, outlines the ways that an effective follower must negotiate roles, remain a follower while gaining authority as a leader, and can grow into a great leader. In his accounts of Agricola's early political appointments, Tacitus emphasizes Agricola's followership traits, such as loyalty, humility, and honesty. With time, Agricola gained more and more leadership responsibility and ultimately became the Legatus Praetorius (military governor) of the British colony from 78 CE to 84 CE. Tacitus focuses on the ways that Agricola leads this turbulent outpost by cultivating good followership among the Roman legions already there and by creating opportunities for the Britons to see themselves as his followers rather than as an occupied people. This case applies leader-member exchange and other concepts on leader-follower relationships to Agricola's life as both a leader and a follower. Leader-member exchange theory helps contextualize how leaders approach relationships with their followers and how those relationships contribute to varying degrees of success. Agricola's growth from a follower to a leader is also viewed through the lens of followership, providing one perspective in which great leaders are developed. Students will be asked to analyze Agricola's major life events and use those historical events to define the qualities of effective followership, explain how effective followers can move into leadership roles, and discuss how followership is often required of effective leaders.
