Coinbase charged a commission for trading on its exchange, whereas other players in the market were offering commission-free trading. The company acknowledged that commission-free trading created pressure on Coinbase for its growth. Coinbase also acknowledged competition from decentralized finance apps like Uniswap that made trading possible without the intervention of middlemen such as banks or brokerages and hence government-issued ID, social security number, etc., was not required for trading. Cryptocurrencies were also very volatile, although their demand was increasing. Armstrong nevertheless believed Coinbase had a bright future. How can Armstrong combat competition?
