Description
Summary:Conventional monetary policy has relied on adjusting key interest rates to influence aggregate demand and economic output. However, the COVID-19 pandemic crisis led several economies to deploy unconventional monetary policies (UMPs) such as asset purchase programs, term funding facilities, long-term repo operations (LTRO), targeted long-term repo operations (TLTRO), negative interest rates, and forward guidance (FG). This case discusses the main UMPs central banks have used to limit the economic damage caused by the pandemic and bolster economic recovery. It pushes students to apply their understanding of economics to assessing the mechanism of these UMPs and their positive and negative effects in the current context.
