| Summary: | Byju's was the first startup from India to become a decacorn, having achieved a valuation of $10 billion. Amiya, a budding entrepreneur, wants to start a venture in the edtech space and is inspired by the growth story of Byju's. However, she wants to avoid the controversies Byju's has faced in recent years. The spurt in Byju's growth in 2020-2021 was accompanied by a lot of public attention. This was mainly due to the hyper aggressive behaviour of sales staff, posted on social media, which raised public consternation about the toxic work culture. Fuel to the fire was added by court cases against the company for making tall claims of making coders out of school going children and enabling them to get six figures in salary. The aggressive promotions and stressful work environment generated negativity against the brand in the market. This case will enable students to apply a theory of ethics and related concepts to exponential growth of startups, taking the specific context of Byju's. This case facilitates the students in examining startups driven by pressure to grow rapidly which impacts the organization culture, and indulge in unrealistic advertising which creates public acrimony. It also enables students to discuss how rapid acquisitions may create a possibility of monopoly in the market. |
