Description
Summary:This case study presents the challenges faced by Unigrà's packaging development manager, Francesca Savini, in complying with the new Italian environmental labelling legislation. Unigrà is an Italian agri-food group that specialises in the transformation and sale of vegetable oils and fats. Its main products are margarines and blends, which are mainly sold through unidentified packaging or unprinted packaging. In 2020, Italy's Ministry of Ecological Transition enacted a law to respond to the growing customer concerns about the environmental impact of their purchases, which will take effect in July 2022. To protect the environment and in order to facilitate collection, reuse, recovery, and end-of-life management of the packages, all products sold in Italy must now include an alphanumeric coding that specifies the material used in packaging and how and where to dispose it.This case study highlights the impact of the new legislation on Unigrà's financial performance and the steps required to identify and evaluate the alternatives to comply with the legislation. Francesca has listed several alternatives: 1) buy a new printer; 2) ask the packaging supplier to include the alphanumeric code in the package; 3) make use of transport documents; or 4) develop digital documents. The case invites students to define the best printer to purchase among several options, identify other alternatives, and assess the best alternative to comply with the legislation by taking into account their benefits and costs. The case study is based on a fictitious but legitimate situation of a real company and corporate event. The data is real and was obtained exclusively from public sources, however the situation described and the characters' names are fictional.
