Description
Summary:This case involves an ophthalmology group that has recently sold its practice to a local private Catholic three-hospital health system. Within a short period of time, the Catholic health system sells itself (including the ophthalmology group's practice) to a larger state-owned university health system. The case deals with integration issues such as potential culture clashes, speed of integration, and loss of control in the selection of appropriate medical devices (e.g., lens implants). It provides the instructor with the opportunity to introduce and utilize the concept of evidence-based management and evidence-based medicine. Readings on evidence-based management and evidence-based medicine are provided. These readings should be completed prior to reading the case. They allow the instructor to guide the student through academic literature on the process of evidence-based management and medicine using a scenario that is fast becoming more prevalent and disruptive in the United States.
