| Summary: | This case study highlights the stakeholder participations and activities of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF; or in English, Doctors without Borders) and its effort to save lives during COVID-19 epidemic. Since the 1970s, MSF has grown into an international institution with a reputation for outspoken protest as well as technical efficiency. It has also expanded beyond emergency response, providing for a wider range of endeavors, including AIDS care. Moreover, the case describes this organization's response during COVID-19 pandemic. It provides an overview of the activities taking place in Europe and Africa and how MSF is dealing with this emergency situation. In addition to this kind of emergency response, MSF is also known for its work for illegal migrants and refugees. Beside their emergency responses, a primary objective of MSF's work is to give humanitarian support to migrants and refuges. The MSF effort to save lives is faced with operational dilemmas that are highlighted in the case. MSF continually faces the problem of defining its own limits. Therefore, the case study provides an outlook of the stakeholder participations and challenges faced by the MSF staff and volunteers. Even after all the challenges faced by the medical staff, MSF provides support to people based on need regardless of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation. This case asks students to discuss the stakeholder engagement in MSF and how stakeholders participate in the MSF decision-making process. |
