Summary:Tourism is one of the largest contributors to the Indian economy. Unfortunately, the growth and development of tourism in India are negatively affected by poor public sanitation practices and lack of effective waste management policies. To address this impediment to tourism, the Indian government has initiated the 'Swachh Bharat' (Clean India) campaign with support from public and private sectors. Similar programs were pursued earlier by several other countries successfully. Current case documents the political and cultural challenges faced by the local authorities in implementing Clean India campaign in urban and rural areas in India. Several success stories were also presented.
