Description
Summary:This case follows the story of Marion Thompson, an academic advisor at Barnett Marshall University (BMU) in New York, and three senior student-athletes whom she counseled with differing frequencies in their final year at BMU. William Scott, Harrison Davies, and Joan Short are all facing unique challenges as they transition away from their sport. Willie is feeling lost, his dreams of playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) have faded and he is now left struggling to understand his identity outside of being a basketball star. Harrison is feeling unprepared for the professional world. He is frustrated that athletics took up so much of his time, preventing him from gaining much experience. Lastly, Joan feels as though she has lost her community after finishing her last season on the team, the stress of school and applying for medical school has left her feeling isolated and alone. Based on these experiences, Thompson is determined to help student-athletes at BMU have a healthier transition away from their sport, but must determine the best course of action to address transitional issues.
