| Summary: | The Electric Reliability Council of Texas Inc (ERCOT) failed in disaster management when an Arctic blast hit Texas in February 2021. Due to lack of preparedness and weather forecasting errors, ERCOT experienced 40% power generation failure, frozen pipes in homes and businesses, power outages, and loss of lives due to freezing conditions. In March 2021, the ERCOT board fired CEO Bill Magness. There was also an ongoing debate whether Texas should remain deregulated or similar to other U.S. states to integrate itself with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Further, discussion also revolved around need for winterization of power plants so that ERCOT could avoid freezing conditions in the future. However, the impact of extreme winter weather is not very common in Texas. ERCOT management during this crisis faced several challenges. Should the management of ERCOT integrate Texas power utility with that of the FERC? Should they order winterization of equipment? What overall strategies should ERCOT'S management undertake to prevent such damages in the future? |
