Description
Summary:Startup Pharma's (SP) founders envisioned an organization that "put patients first" and gave employees "the best work experience of their lives." As CEO, Jim Peters inspired people to engage in collaborative decision-making, act in teams, and live the firm's values in their daily work life. Just as the company was establishing itself, the 2008 financial crisis hit. The organization survived by restructuring its finances and leaning into its core values. Leadership then prompted rapid growth through a series of mergers and acquisitions. Once established as a well-known orphan drug manufacturer, leadership expanded SP's identity to include research and development. This radical shift altered SP's structure, performance metrics, and talent base. These changes were not ubiquitously well-received. Jim knew that leading a startup meant proactively reshaping norms in response to external and internal stakeholder threats. Could the authenticity of SP's core values be preserved as strategic development altered the firm's identity?
