| Summary: | This critical incident discussed the impact Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) had on staffing, human resource management policy, as well as a one HR director's difficult situation. During the initial COVID response, many companies shut down temporarily to reduce the spread of the virus, businesses were categorized as either essential or non-essential, and essential companies were allowed to remain in operation. There was no unified national regulation to combat the spread of this virus, rather individual states and municipalities were allowed to establish their own suggestions/recommendations regarding COVID-19 responses in the workplace. This caused an issue when companies operated in multiple states with multiple social, political, and demographic differences. Companies needed to evaluate current policies to ensure equity. The effect of the COVID pandemic heightened the need for greater clarity in HRM policy while functioning outside of established operating procedures, while working in times of regulatory uncertainty. |
