| Summary: | What are you willing to do to break a story? How many sources do you need? How strong do your sources need to be? In October 2019, Birmingham, Alabama-based CBS 42 broke the story of a lifetime, confirming that a three-year-old girl who was kidnapped and was missing for several days had been found during a police search of an apartment complex. CBS 42 had it confirmed while all of its competitors scrounged to verify the information, which they never did. Unfortunately for CBS 42, that is because the girl had not been found. The CBS 42 story and subsequent community celebration were spreading as police continued their search. By the time the accurate conclusion of the search was released, the inaccurate report was too widespread to control. As CBS 42 went into damage control, breaking the story of a lifetime had now become a lesson for students in journalism school. |
