Description
Summary:Joe is the department chair of fictional Mt. Pleasant College in Indiana. He is a "toucher." Believing he communicates best through touching, he does so with absolutely no ill intent. His colleagues tolerate his greeting behavior because he is a good department chair and, they have come to accept that Joe has a heart of a child. Eyeballs may roll when he gets into touching mode, but his colleagues rationalize, "that's just Joe." Nobody gets truly offended when he forgets the etiquette of professional greeting behavior. No one until Niu comes along. She is a new colleague from a different culture where a touch or a hand gesture may mean something quite different than it does in Joe's department. Joe tries to assimilate Niu into his version of U.S. culture, and this makes her feel increasingly uncomfortable. Because of Niu's cultural value of saving face, she is hesitant to speak to him about her impressions. It is only after several department meetings, all ending with Joe shaming her, that Niu finally explodes.
