Description
Summary:Meet Jodi(e), a character composed of actual life stories. Identified from birth as a girl, Jodi(e) wanted so much to be a boy but knew a life of integrity would require a geographic and emotional distance from family to become the man he craved to be. Years of managing conflict and contradiction followed. Paradoxically, Jodi knew he was seeking both anonymity and a relationship. During recovery from an attempted suicide, he thought much about his rescuers. They were doing their job, as was his line-manager. It seemed she and he had tacitly agreed that a more flexible night schedule would suit Jodi better. 'Intersectionality' and 'transitional justice', concepts not commonly covered in management education, are illustrated in this case through the consideration of gender diversity and fluidity. The case links the tensions between individualisation, categorisation and the collective wellbeing of humanity to their expression in contemporary employment practices. The case is also an opportunity to explore the work of the Principles for Responsible Management Education with the associated responsibilities of managers to respect the dignity of all people and thus connect personal privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to citizen obligation.
