| Summary: | After the second gun violence incident in a neighboring state, a county executive convenes a commission to recommend a county-wide public safety plan to address gun violence, including mass shootings in county public schools. One proposal that the school board has debated is to arm schoolteachers and another proposal preferred by police officers is to provide police officer coverage at each county public school. Consequently, the teachers' union and the police union are at odds about the best strategy to mitigate and combat gun violence on school grounds and at school-related events. Like their respective labor unions, twin sisters Madison (an elementary schoolteacher) and McKenzie (a police officer) also disagree about the most effective policy to protect students and school staff during a school mass shooting. Both women are presidents of their respective local unions and are responsible for developing a school public safety plan for the county with input from their respective members. This case highlights the challenges of crafting an effective workforce policy that employees will embrace and comply with, as well as one that management can easily enforce. |
