Description
Summary:Carl stands in front of most of his newsroom staff. As a long-time employee and current news director of WMC in Memphis, Tennessee, he knows that there are times to make sure that management, anchors, reporters, and producers are on the same page. This is one of those times. WMC is preparing for what could be the biggest story of the year. Earlier in the month, a 29-year-old Black man died 3 days after an altercation with Memphis Police. Police reports did not initially have many details, but in the last several days, five officers have been charged with murder. Additionally, the city announced that it is releasing footage from the altercation. With the story now making national headlines, WMC needs to be on its A-game. However, as the staff pieces together its plan moving forward, a young reporter asks an unexpected question: "Should we actually publish the footage?" A veteran reporter immediately responds with a confident yes, but the newsroom takes a step back. Is there a moral obligation by news outlets that trumps ratings and standard breaking-news coverage? Students will be asked to analyze what ethical determinations must be made by journalists in seeking and adequately reporting stories for the audience in their respective markets.
